Weeds grow in Milwaukee Lawns and gardens whether we like it or not. They compete with plants and the lawn for water and nutrients and they make the garden look less attractive because they grow in random locations.
To solve this problem, weeds need to be removed. However, weeds often grow back for various reasons. One reason is that they were not removed completely and part of their roots stayed in the soil. The Root will grow again and a new weed will appear. Weeds can also show up do to wind and also birds and animals. Keeping your Lawn cut too low also will help weeds grow.
Removing Weeds
The following are different techniques to remove weeds:
- Pulling Weeds by Hand
- Pulling Weeds with a Hoe
- Using a Chemicals
The best time to remove weeds is when the soil is damp. Damp soil is loose and easier to remove weeds with their roots. When the soil is dry it is harder. This is when you chance snapping the root when pulling.
Pulling Weeds by Hand
Pulling weeds by hand is still the best way to remove weeds. Weeds with shallow roots, can be pulled out by the stem with one hand and pulled gently. The weed pulls out nicely with its roots. Regardless I find it best to use a weeding tool or garden hoe. This way you will have less chance of leaving any roots behind.
Using Weed Killer
Using a Lawn Fertilizer with Weed Control
A fertilized lawn has less weeds since a healthy lawn is dense and leaves little space for weeds to grow. It is recommended that you fertilize your lawn twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.
