Landscaping Milwaukee | Trees close to house ideas | Nelson’s Landscaping

Planting trees close to the home accentuates focal points, such as entryways, flowerbeds and patios. Focal points enhance a home’s aesthetic properties, but also may deteriorate them.

Tree Location

When planting trees in your yard close to your house remember a few factors.  Entryways receive the highest amount of traffic and need sturdy trees that that can handle this condition.  Keep trees five to six feet away from sidewalks and driveways, the roots  may push up the concrete or blacktop. Check the size of the tree at maturity before you plant. It will save you headaches in the long run.

Evergreens

Evergreen trees provide year round foliage and color, making them desirable for landscaping accents, such as hedges, borders, and entrances. Some evergreen trees grow tall, but have a small spread. These trees are good for planting near the north end of the home to block cold winter winds and snow without the high risk of damage that planting larger evergreens may cause. Landscaping evergreens include the baby blue Colorado spruce, American holly and cascade falls bald cypress . Prune the spruce and holly into ornamental trees for use as backdrops or hedges. The cascading cypress grows up to eight feet with a five-foot spread.

  • They form one of the best background to other plants, causing flowers, textures, berries and leaves of ornamental trees and shrubs to stand out. Picture a mass of Red Twig Dogwood, with their winter time red stems, in front of the dark green trees.
  • An evergreen tree can be used at the corner of a house for framing and strenLandscape Design, Trees, Shrubs, Pruning, Milwaukee Landscapinggth. Cryptomeria or Nellie Stevens Holly are nice choices as they are narrower than many others.
  • Evergreen trees can also be placed in the landscape as a focal point. The location might be in the backyard towards a rear corner. American Holly, with its red berries, is one that I like to use in my designs.

Flowering Trees

Flowering trees can enhance or contrast the colors of your yard and improve your home’s appearance.  Trees like the flowering dogwood and crepe myrtle are small trees that provide colorful blooms for landscape backdrops.

Shade Trees

Shade Trees can be used to split off your landscape. Silver Maples grow big and fast and are best used in large lawns.  Oak trees grow big and strong and medium to slow growing.  A great place to sit under and enjoy a book.

Ornamental Trees

Landscaping Milwaukee, Landscapers Ornamental foliage trees provide shade and block sunlight for patios, decks and entryways. The Japanese maple tree is known for its red color an is a very slow grower.

  • These trees can be used at house corners or near the front door.
  • Ornamental trees can be used as entry trees to a driveway or sidewalk along the driveway. They form a “frame” to go through.
  • Ornamental trees are great by decks and patios.
