Common Landscaping mistakes. Here are some tips on landscaping and Design for Milwaukee Properties.

Not enough Fall color in your yard.

Home owners need to look at all the seasons for their landscape.  Colorful foliage trees will give you great colors in the fall when the weather is getting colder.

Brightly colored foliage, flowers or fruit attract attention. When brilliant color is scattered along the foundation or elsewhere around the yard, it confuses and may overwhelm the viewer.

Concentrate color where accent is desired. The goal is to attract attention to focal areas of the house.

Unorganized Plants.

They also create maintenance problems in terms of mowing, raking, and giving plants the amount of water and fertilizer they need.

Group shrubs and trees in mulched plant beds bordering the lawn.

When plants are buried too deep, they can get root rot, stem rot, bark cracking and disease.

Read and follow the label before using any chemical or pesticide.

Apply the right amount of fertilizer or lime. Applying too much fertilizer is not only a waste of money, but it can burn plants.

Trees should never be topped. This destroys the branching control and shape. Improper pruning and topping often leads to branches dying and shortens the tree’s life.

More plants are killed in Milwaukee from too much water than from lack of water. Many root and disease problems are the result of over watering. As a general rule, established landscape plants and lawns only need 1 inch of rain every 7 to 10 days.  Grass can go survive for 6 weeks without water.

Too much mulch. Mulch is a valuable tool for conserving soil moisture, protecting tree roots and suppressing weeds. Many people apply deep mounds of mulch, This is just like planting your rootball too deep, it increases root and stem rot. Never apply more than 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the root zone of trees and shrubs. Go as far as twice the canopy width of trees to protect tree roots, but never go too deep.
