Garden and Landscaping to attract birds

Eastern_Bluebird-27527-2Getting birds to come to your garden and landscaping is simple.  Keeping a natural look will coax birds into sticking around and even nesting in your bushes and plants.    Berry producing shrubs and plants of course will attract birds, and layering your plants to include small trees and ferns will create a welcoming environment for birds looking for both food and shelter from the environment and prowling animals.  Allow your perennials and shrubs to knit together.  Allow the dead leaves to lie beneath to attract insects for birds like wrens, and thrashers to come and eat.  Don’t cut back your flower beds until spring so doves, goldfinches and other birds can find shelter in them when looking for seeds and insects.

A simple addition of a birdbath is a great start to bringing in birds to your location.  Year-round water will allow your property to be a destination point for birds.  Using native plants is another great option, seeds, berries, nectar and nuts all come and go at different times of the season and that will also keep your property a destination area for birds.  Don’t be afraid to include nesting boxes as well as they will attract birds like bluebirds to the area that usually like to nest in cavities that other birds have made.
