Fall is the best time to fertilize and weed your lawn.  Right now weeds are preparing for winter by drawing nutrients from their leaves into their roots.  They also will draw herbicides into their root systems fore effectively killing the weeds.  For the same reason, this is a great time to winterize your grass.  If you plan on seeding or sodding your lawn, mid to late September is a great time, Cool temperatures make sodding very successful.  Be sure it is done before cold weather sets in. You also want to cut your lawn slightly shorter in the fall, it will help prevent the grass from matting down under leaves and snow.
