Fall Cleanup Checklist

Time to get your yard ready for the upcoming winter.  Following this checklist can be helpful to get the most out of your yard quickly next year.

Till that garden, cut back your perennials and protect cold-sensitive plants

After the fall harvest and first frost, removing old plants and debris while you till the garden will speed up your spring cleanup for next year.  Adding your compost right now will also get your soil ready for next years growing season.  You can also take your perennials and but them back.  Adding cloth wraps and plastic barriers to your cold- sensitive plants.  If you plan on planting bulbs or shrubs, this is a good time to do it.

Trim branches and prune trees and shrubs

During the summer you may have spotted a few branches that hung too low or were out of place.  You may also have notice a few that looked like they can be trouble with the added weight of snow on them.  Right now is a good time to trim them.

Gutter Cleaning

Clearing the leaves and debris from your gutters right now is a good idea.  After the leaves have dropped you shouldn’t have much gutter cleaning to do after this.

Aerate your soil

In order to make sure that nutrients can reach your lawns roots, aerate the soil.

Fall Fertilization

Give your lawn enough food and energy to handle the long winter with fall fertilization.  This will also help get you that thick, green lawn in the spring with quicker recovery.

Clean out all the debris

All the leaves, dead plants and debris laying in your lawn over the winter can create a perfect place for mold and pests to settle.  This also gives you a head start on your spring clean-up next season.

Last Mow

Give your lawn a close cut just before winter.  This will help the soil dry out faster in the spring after the large snow thaw and allow your lawn to green up quicker.
