There are two basic options when confronted with hot, dry weather. One option is to do nothing and allow the grass to go dormant. The alternative is to water the grass during dry weather to maintain a green, actively growing lawn.
Most Grasses in Milwaukee are cool season grasses. They are at risk of dying if dormant for more than six weeks. it’s Its a good idea to give your grass a good soaking after 6 weeks to make sure your lawn won’t die. You can water it again one week later and you should notice your lawn getting green. 
Early mornings are the best time to water a lawn. This way the water will soak more deeply into the soil allowing roots to grow less shallow and with deeper roots, your grass will handle droughts better.
Cutting your lawn immediately after watering your lawn isn’t a good idea. Clumps of grass can hold water from soaking into the soil and you can increase the chances of burning the grass.
Try and water everything at one time. This will shorten the chance for evaporation.
